“…An electrical short in an ice maker caused the fire…the restaurant’s sprinkler system did go on, but not right away..Damage to the structure and contents is Restaurant Fire Risksestimated to be about $75,000 and loss of business about $10,000, fire officials said…”

A fire at Gordon Biersch Brewery Restaurant in Mission Valley was swiftly knocked down Sunday afternoon by an engine company that happened to be in the restaurant parking lot dousing a car fire, the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department reported. About 1:15 p.m., the restaurant manager hailed the fire crew in the parking lot at Mission Center Road near Camino de la Reina. Firefighters found waist-high smoke and flames in the kitchen, said San Diego fire department spokesman Maurice Luque.

About 200 diners and Gordon Biersch staff were evacuated and no injuries were reported, Luque said. The restaurant was closed for business for the rest of the day.

Per procedure, the San Diego County Department of Environmental Health was notified and will inspect the restaurant to determine when it is safe to reopen for business, Luque said.

Hospitality Industry Property Risks: Florida Hotel’s Restaurant Deck Collapses Into Water Injuring More Than Twenty People, Two Seriously

“…(the restaurant) lost power when the collapse happened, casting victims and rescuers alike into the dark…bartenders were diving into the water Florida Restaurant Deck Collapseto help rescue patrons. Fire trucks pulled to the water’s edge and extended their ladders to help patrons climb to safety…approximately 100 people were on the deck when it fell into the water. The deck’s official capacity was not immediately known…”

As fans packed Shuckers Waterfront Grill to cheer on the Miami Heat against the San Antonio Spurs Thursday night, the waterfront patio deck gave way, crashing into Biscayne Bay, spilling dozens of terrified patrons into the water. The accident happened at the popular North Bay Village spot, in back of the Best Western Plus on the Bay Inn & Marina, 1819 79th Street Causeway.

As many as two dozen people were injured. By 11:20 p.m., 15 people had been transported to various hospitals, two of them in serious condition, said Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Capt. Eugene Germain Jr. Another fire captain said one person might be missing and that a search was underway as rain fell.

Hospitality Industry Property Risks: California Hotel Exterior Facade Collapses Damaging Electrical System And Sprinklers, Flooding Three Floors

Hotel Property Damage“…the façade tore down sprinkler lines, sending water rushing into some of the rooms. Three floors flooded, damaging the electrical system. Officials say city engineers will be evaluating the building’s structural integrity…”

Work crews will be busy Friday cleaning up the damage left behind after part of a local hotel building collapses. Some guests at the Hampton Inn on Greenwood Street were evacuated overnight, after the hotel’s facade suddenly collapsed.

Pieces littered the ground with debris, making a mess on the north side of the building. People staying at the hotel said they heard a loud noise, grabbed their stuff and got out.

Guests were either moved to other rooms, or sent to other Hampton Inn locations.

No word what caused the collapse.

Hospitality Industry Insurance Risks: Hotels Must Purchase “Additional Terrorism Clause” To Have Losses Covered When Government Classifies Bombing Incidents “Acts Of Terror”

The hotels located on or near Boylston Street are still trying to get their feet back under them after the tragedy in Boston, reeling from the lack of business associated with the incident’s aftermath. Hotels are looking to their insurance companies to cover their losses, but, interestingly enough, the payout depends upon whether or not the government officially declares the marathon bombings an “act of terror.”

 According to ABC News, President Obama called the bombings an “act of terror,” but the treasury secretary, attorney general, and secretary of state have yet to speak on the designation, and have set no time frame in which to do so.

“If there is no terror finding, damages would be covered in general under regular property-and-casualty policies,” Robert Hartwig, president of the trade group Insurance Information Institute, told ABC News. If it’s declared an “act of terror,” however, only those who purchased the additional terrorism clause would have their losses covered by insurance.

Hospitality Industry Property Risks: North Carolina Hotel Suffers Extensive Water Damage After "Prank Phone Call" Causes Guest To Activate Fire Sprinkler

“…The caller told the guest who answered to activate the fire sprinkler in the room because there was a gas leak. After the guest followed the directions, the caller hung up…”

For the second time this year, a Leland hotel has suffered extensive damage because of a prank phone call. Leland Police say early Sunday morning, someone called the front desk of the Best Western off US 17 and asked to be transferred to a room.

The same thing happened to another guest in the hotel back in May. That prank flooded the first two floors of the hotel and caused thousands of dollars in damage.

Leland Police detectives believe this prank may be only one of many nationwide, as was the case back in the spring. Detectives are investigating any and all leads and plan on possible collaboration with federal officials to aid in this investigation.

Hospitality Industry Property Risks: Oregon Hotel Fire Caused By Cigarette Thrown In Bark Dust; $75,000 In Damage To Structure

“…the building’s fire sprinkler system activated in the attic and stopped that fire from spreading to the rest of the hotel…Fire investigators said the fire started in bark dust and they believe the fire had been burning for some time…The fire caused at least $75,000 in damages to the building and its contents…”

A cigarette is to blame for a fire that damaged the side of the Best Western Hotel in Forest Grove on Sunday afternoon. Firefighters were called to the hotel at 3933 Pacific Ave. at about 2:45 p.m. to reports of a fire burning up the side of the building.

When fire crews arrived, they were able to put the fire out, but not before it had spread up the two-story hotel.

Hotel guests had reported smelling smoke earlier in the day, but nothing was ever found.

A hotel housekeeper first spotted the fire and quickly started to evacuate about a dozen guests at the hotel.

Officials said another housekeeper grabbed a fire extinguisher but the fire was already burning inside the wall space. Staff at the hotel are working to find another hotel in the area for displaced guests.

Fire officials said this is one of several fires in bark dust that has occurred over the last week in Washington County.

Hospitality Industry Property Risks: Missouri Motels "Non-Compliant" For Failing To Install Manual Fire Alarms With Specific Decibel Levels; Cost Of New Systems Estimated At $10,000

“…The problem at each motel was either a lack of manual fire alarms or an insufficiently loud fire alarm…the specific fire code, chapter 4603.6.5.1, specifies that hotels or motels with 20 rooms or more must install manual pull systems with specific decibel levels…the cost of installing fire alarm systems at $10,000-$15,000…”

The city of Columbia charged two motels — The Deluxe Inn and America’s Best Value — on Aug. 30 for failing to install manual fire alarms. They are among seven motels found non-compliant with the international fire code after an inspection last year, said Columbia Fire Marshal Brad Fraizer. The motels were given one year after Aug. 25, 2011, to make the necessary adjustments.

Two of the original establishments cited, Super 7 and Motel 6, have since complied, but the other five are currently in violation of a city ordinance related to fire code non-compliance.

They are misdemeanor violations of two city ordinances (sections 9-21 and 9-22), which also violate Chapter 46 of the International Fire Code. According to City Prosecutor Steven Richey, the other three motels are being reviewed for compliance.

The state then makes a sentence recommendation to the judge, who will apply it based on motel and fire department statements about what they’re doing to comply. The city ordinance violations carry fines of between $1 and $1,000 and/or up to 90 days imprisonment.

The fire department was unable to specify which of the motels in question did not have fire alarms and which simply had alarms without the proper noise level.

“There was a range of violations with some hotels not possessing the systems and others that didn’t have the proper decibel levels,” Fraizer said.

Hospitality Industry Safety Risks: Multistory Hotels Face Increased Fire Risk From "Elevator Lift Shafts" That Provide "Ready Pathway For Toxic Smoke And Fire" To Travel Upwards

“…lift shafts provide a ready pathway for smoke and fire to travel upwards in multi-storey buildings.  Buoyant fire gases in a lift shaft can quickly fill upper floors, and there is much evidence to suggest that the majority of fatalities in such fires occur on higher floors significantly removed from the seat of the fire…”

Fires involving lift shafts pose particular risk in hotels where there can be large numbers of people, some of whom may be elderly or infirm, and in an unfamiliar place.  In 2007 alone, it’s estimated that one in 12 hotels and motels in the USA suffered a structural fire. 

That was certainly true in 1980 MGM Grand Hotel fire in Las Vegas which claimed 84 lives, the worst disaster in Nevada history.  In that incident, while the fire primarily only damaged the second floor, most of the deaths occurred on the upper floors, with elevator shafts and stairwells allowing toxic smoke to spread upwards.

It’s hard to overestimate the impact this fire had on both our understanding of vertical fire movement and on the building regulations to mitigate against fire risk.  The fire in a garment factory in a tall building claimed 146 lives, and directly led to new laws on building access and egress, fire proofing requirements, the availability of fire extinguishers, the installation of alarm systems and automatic sprinklers.

Under current fire safety legislation it is the responsibility of the person(s) having responsibility for the building to provide a fire safety risk assessment that includes an emergency evacuation plan for all people likely to be in the premises, including disabled people, and how that plan will be implemented. Such an evacuation plan should not rely upon the intervention of the Fire and Rescue Service to make it work.

Hospitality Industry Property Risks: Washington DC Restaurants Damaged In 2011 Flood "Reinvent Themselves" By Rebuilding With "New Concepts"

Three restaurants at Washington Harbour are preparing to reopen after the spring 2011 flood that covered parts of the K Street complex in 10-plus feet of water. Tony and Joe’s Seafood Palace and Nick’s Riverside Grill are expected to fully open at the end of this week, and Farmers and Fishers plans to reopen as Farmers Fishers Bakers at the end of October. All three closed after an April 2011 storm during which MRP Realty, the company that manages the complex, raised only three-quarters of the floodgates that block the establishments from the Potomac River.

Nick Cibel, whose family owns both Tony and Joe’s and Nick’s Riverside Grill, said the flood was devastating, but he and his relatives have made the best of the situation.

“It was complete destruction at both restaurants, and everything had to be thrown away and rebuilt,” he said. “We are taking full advantage of that by reinventing ourselves. We want to be known by our food, not just the waterfront.”

Both Joe’s and Nick’s have been operating with outside seating and a reduced menu since about a month after the flood, while the interiors have undergone renovations. Tony and Joe’s has an updated design that allows for a wider, unobstructed view of the river. Nick’s Riverside Grill’s square footage has increased by 25 percent, and the restaurant will carry more international cuisine.

Hospitality Industry Property Risks: Thieves Steal Florida Restaurant's Air Conditioning Units During Night As Video Surveillance Documents Theft

“…the surveillance system was rolling as the thieves committed the crime, at around 11 p.m…one suspect can be seen on surveillance unscrewing the AC units. Some time later, a black truck is seen driving by the business…they stole the two air conditioning units, probably for the copper coils…”

Crooks remain at large after stealing the air conditioning units from a South Florida business. The thieves stole two AC units from CafeSolé, located at 711 NW 27 Ave. in Miami.

Delemar believes the truck was involved in the thefts, and said the crooks responsible did their homework. “They pretended that they were cleaning up, that they were some kind of gardening service or something,” said Delemar. “They went ahead and cased the place first, and then, about half an hour later, they showed up, and they took the two units.”

No AC means no business for the restaurant. “Naturally, this is going to affect my business, because I cannot open up with the heat. I don’t have air conditioning inside, so that does affect the business,” Delemar said. “It’s disruptive, it’s disheartening.”
