Hospitality Industry Property Risks: Arkansas Restaurant Closed By Fire And Water Damage Reopens After 8 Months; Business Owners’ Insurance Pays For 80% Of Staff To Be Retained

“…Sixty employees were without work following the fire. The business owners’ insurance coverage allowed the staff to continue earning a Restaurant Fire Riskspaycheck while the restaurant was closed…Calico County partner Scott Blair said they retained about 80 percent of their pre-fire staff and hired about 40 new team members for the re-opening…”

Calico County was forced to shutdown after a fire damaged the restaurant (in the early morning on November 26, 2012)… Police were alerted to the fire after receiving a call from an alarm company that a commercial burglary alarm went off at approximately 2:37 a.m. Monday, according to dispatchers with the Fort Smith Police Department.

Fort Smith police arrived at the scene and alerted the fire department when smoke was seen coming from the building. Fort Smith Department Battalion Chief Tery Graves said responders quickly put out the flames, however, the restaurant suffered severe smoke and water damage. According to a preliminary investigation, the fire appeared to have started in the kitchen area of the restaurant.

Hospitality Industry Property Risks: Texas Restaurant Fire Caused By “Stove Left Burning After Closing”; $10,000 In Smoke And Water Damage

Restaurant Fire Risks“…Fire officials (reported) the restaurant manager had closed up for the evening but forgot to turn off the stove. The fire caused about $10,000 in smoke and water damage to the building…”

Firefighters rushed to save a popular barbecue restaurant on the Northwest side late Saturday.
A fire broke out at the Bill Miller Bar-B-Q Restaurant in the 3200 block of Fredericksburg Road at 11:30 p.m. Saturday.

The stove caught fire but firefighters were able to quickly put out the blaze. The fire caused about $10,000 in smoke and water damage to the building.

Hospitality Industry Property Risks: Texas Hotel Fire Starts In Air Conditioning Unit, Resulting In Extensive Damage And Death Of Elderly Guest From Smoke Inhalation

“…occupants of the actual room where the fire started…woke up in the night to their fire alarm going off and could see fire coming out of the air Hotel Fire and Smoke Damageconditioning unit in their room…the death of hotel guest  Rena Goodson, 74, of Holly Lake Ranch, was attributed to smoke inhalation…she was carried from the burning building by firefighters and transferred to a Dallas hospital, where she died over the weekend…”

Fire investigators said Wednesday that the fire that claimed the life of a Holly Lake Ranch woman and destroyed a large part of the Best Western Trail Dust Inn started in an air conditioning unit.  Assistant Fire Marshall Eric Hill said fire investigators Aaron Kager and David James interviewed hotel guests and combed through the burned out section of the hotel before making the ruling.

The fatal fire broke out sometime before 2 a.m. Saturday in the west wing of the hotel. The assistant fire marshall said the motel was booked to capacity when the fire broke out and forced evacuation of 58 people staying in that section of the hotel. Another 150 people were evacuated from adjoining buildings, which were threatened by the fire that stretched firefighting resources.

Hospitality Industry Property Risks: New Jersey Restaurant Fire Started With “Motor On Top Of Walk-In Cooler”; Floor Collapses And Dining Room Destroyed By Smoke Damage

“…the preliminary investigation indicates the fire might have started with a motor on top of a walk in cooler but this is still under Restaurant Fireinvestigation…the outside structure is still standing but the bar fell into the basement and the dining room was destroyed by smoke damage…”

The Ridgewod Restaurant was severely damaged in an early morning fire, police said. Firefighters and police were called to the restaurant on Brooklyn Stanhope Road at 2:23 a.m. on Saturday by the owners, who said that they had left the business after closing to go out and when they returned they found smoke cinside, according to Lt. Thomas Kmetz, a police department spokesman.

Police arrived to find kitchen door was hot to the touch and they could heard popping noises coming from inside, Kmetz said. The fire department arrived on the scene and found that there was smoke coming out of every possible area of the building that it could get out of, Kmetz said.

Firefighters extinguished the fire but the middle floor where the bar used to be collapsed into the basement and the dining room was destroyed by smoke damage, Kmetz said.

The Hopatcong, Roxbury, Netcong, Mount Arlington and Stanhope fire departments all responded to the blaze.  The restaurant specializes in Portugese and Italian cuisine.

Hospitality Industry Property Risks: Illinois Restaurant Fire Starts In Basement Water Heater; Significant Water And Smoke Damage

A fire that broke out in the basement of Lillie’s Q barbecue restaurant in the Bucktown neighborhood late Thursday night destroyed the restaurant and left a firefighter with minor injuries, officials said. The fire at 11:40 p.m. at the restaurant at 1856 W. North Avenue, officials said. Fire officials said the fire rekindled later at about 4:18 a.m.

Firefighters told restaurant officials that the fire likely started in a water heater in the basement, and not one of the smokers. There were also apartments above the restaurant.Chicago Police closed North Avenue in both directions near Wood Street while firefighters worked to contain the fire. After the fire rekindled at 4:18 a.m. firefighters returned to the restaurant and a firefighter sustained minor injuries at that point.

Hospitality Industry Property Risks: California Hotel Fire Caused By “Guest Throwing Towel Over Candle”; $30,000 In Structural And Smoke Damage

“… a man staying in the second floor room, a worker in town on business regarding the Chevron refinery HOTEL FIREshutdown, reportedly threw the towel over a lit candle in his room before he left just after 5 a.m., in attempts to put it out…hotel employees discovered the fire about five minutes later, and tried to put it out with a fire extinguisher…”

Fire crews knocked down a two-alarm fire at the Courtyard Marriott early Friday morning after a hotel occupant tried to put out a candle by throwing a towel over it, officials said.

Firefighters arrived at the hotel at 3150 Garrity Way at 5:11 a.m., to find the room had gone up in flames, billowing smoke throughout the hotel. The fire was knocked down within 10 minutes, but not before causing $30,000 in damage, Turner said.

All hotel occupants were evacuated from their rooms, Turner said. Nobody was injured, but some hotel guests were disturbed by the morning’s events.

“The Marriott did a good job of getting everyone out, giving everyone breakfast and making sure all of the guests were safe,” Turner said. “Most people were very happy.”

Fire crews were able to keep the damage to the one room, and the rest of guests were able to return to their rooms early Friday morning,

Hospitality Industry Property Risks: Massachusetts Motel Fire Starts In “Old Sauna Room” Used For Storage; “Extensive Smoke Damage” Estimated At $50,000 To Concrete Building

“…The fire started in an old sauna room on the first floor next to the main office…the room was being used by Motel Firethe owner for storage…several second-floor motel rooms received extensive smoke damage…”

The Travelodge on Rte. 9 in Natick was evacuated Saturday morning after a two-alarm blaze struck, forcing occupants outside and damaging several rooms. Fire Chief James Sheridan said the department responded to the 1350 Worcester St. motel after receiving multiple 911 calls for a fire beginning at 11:11 a.m.

Sheridan said the building was evacuated, as the first firefighters on the scene saw heavy smoke and fire. They aggressively suppressed the fire and knocked it down quickly.

Sheridan said the department struck a second alarm upon getting to the motel, with firefighters from Framingham and Wellesley covering the central station.

He estimated roughly $50,000 in damages to the concrete building. As of 1:30 p.m., the department was still cleaning up at the scene, he said.

Hospitality Industry Property Risks: South Dakota Hotel Rebuilt After Fire Started By "Cigarette On Couch" Causes $160,000 In Damage

“…Investigators have determined that the fire was started by a cigarette on a couch in the second floor room of Bradley Morris, the tenant who died…The fire caused extensive smoke damage, however, with the second floor most affected…It took nearly three months for workers from Service Master to clean all of the building, a job that included painstaking work on the metal framework of the suspended ceiling…”

The heat of the fire was intense enough to burst the windows of the apartment, but the construction of the building helped keep the blaze contained, Chadron Fire Chief Pat Gould told The Chadron Record shortly after the fire. The fire burned through the ceiling of the apartment, but its spread was limited by the building’s brick walls and the lath and plaster construction of the upper levels.

The clean up job also included replacing every carpet and smoke alarm in the building, repainting, and completely reworking the apartment where the fire started, the Bagneschi’s said.

The work ended up costing some $160,000, a figure doesn’t count the time Bagneschis put into the project themselves. “It’s been quite a chore,” said Larry.

Hospitality Industry Risk Solutions: Oklahoma Restaurant Roof Fire Causes Extensive Structural, Water And Smoke Damage

“…Firefighters arrived quickly, but struggled with the fire because flames became trapped between two layers of the roof toward the back of the building…”

A popular Oklahoma City pizza restaurant is closed following a fire early Tuesday morning. A police officer driving down N. Western near Nichols Hills first reported heavy smoke coming out of the Hideaway Pizza restaurant around 3 a.m.

Once they doused the flames, crews surveyed the damage. It appeared most of the heavy fire damage is in the rear of the structure near the kitchen area. There is smoke and water damage throughout the building.

Firefighters are still trying to figure out what started the blaze; arson investigators and a State Health Department representative spent several hours at the scene.

Fire investigators say it appears the fire had smoldered inside the building for quite a while.

Hospitality Industry Property Risks: North Carolina Restaurant Fire Caused By "Outside Neon Lighting Electrical Short"; Extensive Exterior And Smoke Damage

“…the fire started on the half of the building that serves as the dining area…it went inside to the attic space…in addition to a sizable hole in the building’s roof, the building sustained smoke damage; siding closest to the flames melted and peeled down…”

An electrical short associated with the neon lighting attached to the facia of Peaden’s restaurant and catering service building on McArthur Road caused significant damage to half the building on Thursday, fire officials said. When they responded about 5:30 p.m., the building already had been evacuated, and no one was injured.

“When we first arrived, fire was showing from the gable in the front,” Southern said. Firefighters then attacked the fire from the front and back of the building, he said. The 23 firefighters who responded were quick to bring the fire under control in 15 minutes, he said. That quick response spared the rest of the building from further damage. City health officials visited the building and spoke with the business’s owners, who didn’t want to comment Thursday night, and evaluated the damage. Southern could not say whether the business could reopen today.

However, the restaurant side of the building would need “extensive repair” before it could be usable again, he said.
