Hospitality Industry Crime Risks: New Jersey Hotel Employee Arrested For Stealing “Wedding Reception Cash”; Used Freight Elevator To Avoid Surveillance Cameras And Enter Rooms

A since-fired bell hop at the Saddle Brook Marriott was arrested by local police last night and charged with slipping into the rooms of newlyweds at their receptions and snatching some of their wedding-gift cash.

Timothy Henriquez, 30, of Chester, NY, is charged with two counts of theft — for a July incident in which $770 was taken and for another on Saturday, when a couple said $500 was stolen. He was released on a summons pending a Municipal Court hearing, police said.

“Upon learning of his arrest, Marriott terminated his employment,” Saddle Brook Police Chief Robert Kugler said.

Hospitality Industry Security Solutions: Texas Hotels And Motels Form “Crime-Fighting Network” By Using Email Chain To Report Local Criminal Activity

“…there are about a hundred hotels on an email chain, reporting criminal activity… Awhile back, police busted a counterfeit ring happening in area hotels…they were eventually caught because we had shared the information amongst the hotel network, they were caught by the police Hotel Crime Fighting Networkdepartment…businesses also rely on surveillance cameras to alert each other of suspicious activity…”

You can call it a crime-fighting network of sorts. Area hotels and motels work together to help keep you safe. “You never know when a situation will come up, ” said Bill Brendel, General Manager of the Crockett Hotel downtown.

Unfortunately, Brendel went on to say the crime at the top of hotels’ list are car burglaries. You’ll find most hotels have signs warning you about them. “So we just tell people don’t leave a bunch of things in your car, ‘ Brendel went on to say.

During the peak of the summer tourist season Brendel says the San Antonio Police Department will work closely with downtown hotels to keep an extra eye on your car. “And they do extra surveillance, and it’s been very effective, ” said Brendel.

“…what (hoteliers) want to create is actual security and depth—layers of properly trained personnel to meet the risks that are known for the venue you’re in…if you’re in Times Square, covert effort is more appropriate…vulnerability audits help find ‘weakness in the system that can be hotel securityexploited or lapse during a crisis’…the audit shows some oft-forgotten measures, such as making sure the hotel’s website can handle a thousand times the traffic without crashing or that associates know appropriate protocols….every employee is a crisis manager and a (public relations representative) for the organization…’if you don’t teach them what they should and shouldn’t do, they’ll wing it’, and that can be dangerous to a hotel’s reputation…”

While hotels can be safe havens for guests, they can be the target of attacks as well. Anthony C. Roman, president of risk-management firm Roman & Associates, said the hotel industry has suffered in the last decade. Hard economic times globally have caused hotels to cut back on security budgets. As more hotels are taking the appropriate preventive security measures, other hotel brands have not addressed the issue at all. “And yet other brands are subcontracting their security requirements to private security companies,” he said.

The constant flow of large numbers of people in and out of hotels during daily business hours makes them vulnerable for attacks, according to global intelligence agency Stratfor. “There’s certainly fear,” Haley explained. “There are few targets that offer the potential awards for motivated terrorists that hotels do.” Those rewards are a large target with potentially massive body counts and global exposure. The problem with hotels, he added, is “they’re open and inviting places.”

Hospitality Industry Theft Risks: Hawaii Hotel Store Shoplifter Steals $2,000 Worth Of Merchandise; Surveillance Cameras Record Theft

A shoplifter brazenly stole more than $2,000 worth of merchandise from a small clothing and jewelry shop in a Waikiki hotel. The whole theft was recorded on surveillance cameras, and the video has been posted online in an effort to nab the suspect.

The theft happened Nov. 5 at the Angels By The Sea store at the Waikiki Beach Marriott Hotel. The surveillance video clearly shows a woman looking through some of the clothing. She then removes the clothing from its hanger, rolls it up, and casually puts it in a large bag.

The store’s owner said the woman told the sales clerk a story. According to store owner and designer Nina Thai, the woman claimed to be a jewelry designer from Kauai. “‘I make a lot of jewelry, so I want to have time to take a look so leave me alone,'” Thai said the woman told the clerk.

The store usually has two or three clerks on duty, but Thai said the store was short-handed that day, and only had one clerk at the time. And when that lone clerk was busy with a customer, the shoplifter helped herself to the jewelry.

The store’s management said they discovered the theft because the shoplifter had moved a lot of the jewelry from their usual places. “Because we stay in here more than at home,” said Thai. “So we remember every single item.”

And then they saw the surveillance video, and watched as the woman took earrings, necklaces, pendants, leggings and tops. The haul was the by far the biggest theft in the store’s three-year history.

Hospitality Industry Security Risks: Florida Hotel Security Cameras Capture Armed Robbery Suspects In Action (Video)

Two armed men are on the run after police say they pulled of a hotel heist.

Security cameras captured every moment of the robbery at the Howard Johnson hotel on 50th Street in Tampa.

The footage shows the men make their way from the back of the hotel to the front office, where they force the clerk to empty the cash register at gunpoint. The suspects even take the handsets off the phones to keep the clerk from calling for help.

“These individuals are armed and they’re very determined and were very aggressive,” said Tampa police spokesperson Laura McElroy.

Both men were smart enough to cover their faces while they pulled off the crime, but one of them waited to mask up until after he scoped out the hotel lobby. That footage is giving police at least one clear shot of one of the men.
