The sad truth is that criminals target travelers, especially in and around hotels. The abundance of literature on the topic of hotel security does not seem to have deterred criminals from using hotels as a target of their trade. An informal survey of hotel security staff reveals old patterns of crime repeated and new tricks (or new variations of old tricks) continue as before. There are, however, some practices which can reduce your risk of being the target of crime or other hazards in a hotel.

Hospitality Industry Property Risks: Florida Motel Sprinkler System Malfunctions With Water Flooding Rooms, Hallways And Lobby

“…a water restoration company said it brought an infrared camera that detects moisture and found water damage in several rooms, the lobby and Hotel Water Damagehallways on the first and second floors…Officials said the hotel had to cut off power because all the water became an electrical hazard…”

A sprinkler system malfunctioned at the Crestwood Suites Extended Stay motel on University Boulevard in East Orange County, Orange County Fire Rescue said.
The incident happened at about 8:30 a.m. Thursday.

“It was like a flood coming down. You looked into the lobby from the doors and it was like rain pouring through the ceiling,” said motel guest Andrea Paul.

Hospitality Industry Property Risks: Florida Hotel Room Fire Caused "Box On Top Of Stove Burner"; Water Damage From Sprinkler System

“…someone had placed a box on top of a stove burner and then turned the burner on. The box caught fire and activated the hotel’s sprinkler system, which put out the fire…the sprinkler system drenched the top floor and water seeped down to the first floor, which could have compromised the hotel’s electrical systems…”

The Value Place hotel at the corner of Racetrack Road and Eglin Parkway was evacuated after a small fire started in a room on the second floor about 4:20 p.m. Monday.

Firefighters made sure everyone was cleared out of the hotel and then stayed at the scene until about 9 p.m. to make sure there were no immediate electrical issues that could start another fire.

The hotel’s occupants were sent to other hotels in the area overnight until an electrician can come today to make sure the electrical system is working properly.

Most of the damages the hotel sustained were from the sprinkler water, although there was a small amount of damage from the fire, Wagner said.

Hospitality Industry Property Risks: Kentucky Hotel's Roof Partially Torn Off By High Winds; Water Damage To Top Three Floors From Sprinkler System

“…the National Weather Service was calling for 60-mile-per-hour winds. The top three floors of the hotel had water damage from the sprinkler system and officials say those guests were relocated…”

A Louisville hotel suffered damage in Thursday’s storm. Heavy winds whipped through the airport at an estimated 44-mile-per-hour winds. At one point, part of the roof on the Crowne Plaza Hotel was blown off.

At least 200 rooms were impacted. Several cars in the parking lot were also damaged.

The Crown Plaza was hosting the National Junior Angus Show and was at 100 percent occupancy.

“We’ve also heard the sprinkler system went off in there and that other things could be ruined other than the top floors, so we were anxious to see, but we were very amazed to see all the debris. Amazed. And that’s typically where we park,” says Donna Guice, a hotel guest from Louisiana.

Hospitality Industry Fire Risks: Louisiana Hotel's Rooftop "Electrical Room Fire" Extinguished By Sprinkler System; Building Suffers "Significant Water Damage" As Water Seeps "All The Way To Lobby"

Officials are investigating the cause of a two-alarm fire on the roof of the Brent House Hotel at Ochsner Medical Center’s Old Jefferson campus that prompted the evacuation of a few hundred employees and hotel guests Thursday afternoon. There were reports of two people who suffered minor smoke inhalation, according to Joe Greco, director of the East Bank Consolidated Fire Department.

Firefighters went to the roof and discovered the source of the smoke was a 20-by-30-foot mechanical room that houses the building’s electrical panels and the elevator motors. Greco said the crew encountered heavy smoke and some flames in the room, but were able to extinguish the fire by 1:32 p.m.

The cause of the fire was still not known Thursday evening. Although there was speculation earlier in the day that the blaze may have started in the motor of one of the elevators, Greco said there was no evidence of that.

Hospitality Industry Fire Damage Risks: Texas Hotel Fire "Contained By Protective Water Sprinkler"

 “…a fire protection sprinkler is what prevented the fire from spreading and causing major fire damage.  A restoration company is currently at the hotel conducting clean up…”

Fire investigation determined the fire was unintentional and caused by food cooking in a microwave. 

A fire that could have turned out to be an inferno was kept contained by a protective water sprinkler after a fire broke out at an apartment on Sunday night.

Temple Fire & Rescue responded to a fire at the Candlewood Suites, 1850 Scott Boulevard.

Firefighters arrived at 7:36 p.m. and found smoke in the hallway on the second floor.  Upon making entry into one of the rooms, they located the fire which was quickly extinguished. The fire was under control by 8:10 p.m.

Hospitality Industry Fire Risks: Florida Hotel Is Nearly Destroyed By Fire Caused By Faulty Electrical System And Faulty Sprinklers, Extinguishers Fail To Work

“…the building had a series of problems, including a broken sprinkler system, empty fire extinguishers and smoke detectors without batteries…the building had electrical problems, too, including a sparking outlet in his room. The motel capped the outlet instead of fixing it…”

“…the fire spread from single room, got into the attic and raced throughout building, destroying nearly everything…”

A fire that caused the roof to collapse and burn through a wing of a 430-room Kissimmee motel late Sunday is still burning this morning. Eight people, including two firefighters, have been hospitalized from injuries caused by the blaze at the Vacation Lodge, which essentially functioned as an apartment complex.

The fire investigation, which will likely start Tuesday, will look into the alleged problems with the sprinkler system. Micheal White, who paid $135 a week to live in Room 1230, said he heard an explosion in Room 1305 before the fire broke out.

He said the motel has been in news recently after the water was shut off for 27 days for nonpayment.  He did not know if complex was built with firewalls designed to contain fires.

Hospitality Industry Fire Risks: West Virginia Hotel Fire Kills One Guest As Lack Of Sprinkler System, High Winds And Downed Power Lines Thwart Fire Fighters

“…the hotel is about 50 years old and does not have a sprinkler system. The fire, coupled with 30 to 40 mile-per-hour winds, knocked down nearby power lines, forcing the rescue crews back…”

“…The broken live wires forced rescue crews to wait for the power company to arrive at the scene and disconnect the power…”

One person was found dead Saturday morning at the site of a fire that burned a Logan County motel to the ground the day before. The Logan Motor Lodge on Rt. 10 caught fire at about 11:30 p.m. Friday night, Logan firefighter Chris Hatfield said. Firefighters spent about 10 hours battling the blaze, during which one person was reported missing.

It’s not clear whether the body found Saturday morning was that of the missing person. Authorities have not released the name of the person.

Forty of the hotel’s 45 rooms were occupied at the time of the fire, Hatfield said. No other injuries were reported.

“We had a lot of difficulty as far as the high winds were concerned,” Hatfield said.
