Hospitality Industry Crime Risks: Thieves Steal Missouri Restaurant's Air Conditioning Unit For Third Time In Five Years; Total Losses Over $15,000

“…how thieves could come and go at ease over a span of about 90 minutes, climb the 8-foot-high jail bars protecting their air conditioning unit…essentially locking themselves inside the bars with no fear of getting caught as they dismantled the unit, stripping it of copper and other valuable metals. It was all caught by the surveillance camera…”

Air conditioner thieves struck a favorite Chinese restaurant in East St. Louis last month, for the third time in five years. The losses have topped $15,000 for the Hong Kong Chop Suey at 60thand State.

With almost no progress in the police investigation, the restaurant owners released the surveillance video to FOX 2, hoping to save their business. Instead of talking about food and customers’ orders, workers were talking about thieves again at the restaurant Monday night.

Thieves also hit the restaurant’s a/c units there in 2007 and 2010. Repair and replacement costs have soared. “First timeabout $8,000. Second time about $5,000. This time about $2,000,” Chiu explained.

Hospitality Industry Property Risks: New York Hotel's "Fatal Elevator Accident" Caused By Service Company's "Maintenance Errors"

Maintenance workers failed to enable a door safety circuit on an elevator moments before an advertising executive was killed after stepping into the elevator in an office tower in Midtown Manhattan, according to officials from the city’s Department of Buildings and the Department of Investigations.

According to officials, the workers did three things wrong:

  • They never re-enabled the safety circuit after performing the upgrade and restoring the elevator to normal service.
  • They did not post a warning that work was being performed, as required under the city’s building code.
  • They did not call the Buildings Department for an inspection, as legally required, before putting the elevator back into service.

If the circuit had been working properly, officials said, it would most likely have prevented the elevator from moving abruptly and pinning the executive, Suzanne Hart, inside an elevator shaft. As a result, the Buildings Department is suspending the license of the owner of the maintenance company, Transel Elevator, that performed the work and will seek to have the license revoked.

Hospitality Industry Property Risks: Thirty-Five Niagara Falls Motel Rooms Extensively Damaged By "Partying High School Students"; Difficulties In Collecting From Parents And School

“…The room was a prime example of the swath of destruction cut through the motel. Holes had been punched in the wall, furniture broken and bathroom ceiling tiles had been ripped out in the bathroom…”

Thirty-five rooms at the Avenue Inn on Lundy’s Lane were rented to high school students from Welland’s Notre Dame College School the night of the school’s Christmas semiformal, which was held up the street at the Americana Resort and Conference Centre. Overnight on Friday, Dec. 9, 22 of those rooms were damaged extensively.

“I don’t want to see this happen again,” David Linqi Liu, general manager and co-owner of the Avenue Inn motel said as he continued to sift through the wreckage of what was once Room 135 at the motel. As he walks around the room, the crunching of broken glass beneath his feet can be heard.
“We’ve had a lot of parties here, but we’ve never had this much damage,” said Harry Liu, David’s son who helps his dad and mother, Ling Cao run the Avenue as he flipped through an album of photos documenting the destruction. “A toilet was smashed, furniture and beds were overturned, a door was kicked in, a door was broken. Even an oven door was ripped off and its glass broken.”
According to Robert Forget, the on-duty manager the night of the incident, police were called by a motel guest not associated with the party. “They did show up for a little bit but they told us it was our responsibility,” Forget said. “They said it was a civil matter, not criminal.”
