Hospitality Industry Property Risks: Louisiana Hotel Laundry Room Fire Causes “Heavy Water Damage” And Forces Evacuation Of Entire Building

“…The fire was found to have originated in a laundry room on the fourth floor of the hotel. The third and fourth floors sustained heavy water damage, as the sprinkler system helped to squelch the blaze…(additional Hotel fire and smoke damagefirefighters were needed) to assist with getting materials that were burned and water-damaged out of the building…”

A Saturday night fire at the CBD’s Hotel Intercontinental (444 St. Charles Ave.) damaged the middle floors of the 14-story structure, and moved guests to a nearby ballroom, according to the New Orleans Fire Department.

Firefighters went door-to-door at the 410 rooms to ensure that all guests evacuated the building. Initially, the fire was at two alarms, but the third and fourth alarms were struck to provide more manpower. A total of 31 trucks and 98 NOFD personnel were at the scene.

The fire was largely contained to the area where the fire originated, but smoke damage was reported on the floors above the fourth.

The fire was under control by 7:30 p.m. The only reports of injury in the blaze were from a guest who told authorities they were having trouble breathing. The guest refused medical assistance. The displaced guests were relocated to the second-floor ballroom in the Hilton New Orleans, which is located across St. Charles Ave.

Hospitality Industry Property Risks: Florida Hotel Room Fire Caused "Box On Top Of Stove Burner"; Water Damage From Sprinkler System

“…someone had placed a box on top of a stove burner and then turned the burner on. The box caught fire and activated the hotel’s sprinkler system, which put out the fire…the sprinkler system drenched the top floor and water seeped down to the first floor, which could have compromised the hotel’s electrical systems…”

The Value Place hotel at the corner of Racetrack Road and Eglin Parkway was evacuated after a small fire started in a room on the second floor about 4:20 p.m. Monday.

Firefighters made sure everyone was cleared out of the hotel and then stayed at the scene until about 9 p.m. to make sure there were no immediate electrical issues that could start another fire.

The hotel’s occupants were sent to other hotels in the area overnight until an electrician can come today to make sure the electrical system is working properly.

Most of the damages the hotel sustained were from the sprinkler water, although there was a small amount of damage from the fire, Wagner said.

Hospitality Industry Property Risks: Indiana Hotel Fire Caused By "Electrical Malfunction Of Room's Heating Unit"

“…investigators discovered an electrical malfunction in the room’s heating unit…the sprinkler system put the fire out, saving a large portion of the building from catching fire…”

An electrical malfunction forced several occupants of the Fort Wayne Marriott to evacuate after a fire broke out in a second floor room. Fort Wayne firefighters were called to the hotel on East Washington Center Road just after 11:30 Monday night.

According to Fort Wayne Fire Department Battalion Chief Mike Pinkham, the fire was confined to a second floor room on the hotel’s west side.

Fire officials and hotel management didn’t know how many occupants were in that wing of the building, but 12 to 14 rooms were occupied. No one was inside the room where the fire started.

Heavy smoke filled the entire wing on the second floor. Fire alarms sent most occupants outside into frigid temperatures. Pinkham said officers with the Fort Wayne Police Department helped evacuate several occupants while fire crews were arriving.

Hospitality Industry Property Risks: Mississippi Hotel Fire Causes $4 Million In Damage As Roof And Most Of Third Floor Rooms Destroyed; Heavy Water Damage To Lower Floors

“…Three-quarters of the roof is gone, along with the tower over the elevator shaft, which collapsed… Most of the third floor rooms were damaged or destroyed by fire and the lower floors inundated by water from the fire hoses…”

Federal investigators have joined the investigation into Wednesday’s fire at a Howard Johnson Inn on the Mississippi Gulf Coast.

The fire burned through the roof of the three-story hotel, doing an estimated $4 million in damage. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms will help state and local officials determine the origin and cause of the fire, says Joel Lee, who leads the ATF’s Gulfport field office.

Four Jackson County fire departments responded to the blaze at the hotel Wednesday, which is in the unincorporated St. Martin community north of Ocean Springs. The fire burned for more than three hours.

Officials said the fire spread because the older building lacked the fireproofing required by building codes in newer structures. Another fire damaged the hotel in 2010.

Hospitality Industry Property Risks: South Dakota Hotel Rebuilt After Fire Started By "Cigarette On Couch" Causes $160,000 In Damage

“…Investigators have determined that the fire was started by a cigarette on a couch in the second floor room of Bradley Morris, the tenant who died…The fire caused extensive smoke damage, however, with the second floor most affected…It took nearly three months for workers from Service Master to clean all of the building, a job that included painstaking work on the metal framework of the suspended ceiling…”

The heat of the fire was intense enough to burst the windows of the apartment, but the construction of the building helped keep the blaze contained, Chadron Fire Chief Pat Gould told The Chadron Record shortly after the fire. The fire burned through the ceiling of the apartment, but its spread was limited by the building’s brick walls and the lath and plaster construction of the upper levels.

The clean up job also included replacing every carpet and smoke alarm in the building, repainting, and completely reworking the apartment where the fire started, the Bagneschi’s said.

The work ended up costing some $160,000, a figure doesn’t count the time Bagneschis put into the project themselves. “It’s been quite a chore,” said Larry.

Hospitality Industry Property Risks: Oregon Hotel Fire Caused By Cigarette Thrown In Bark Dust; $75,000 In Damage To Structure

“…the building’s fire sprinkler system activated in the attic and stopped that fire from spreading to the rest of the hotel…Fire investigators said the fire started in bark dust and they believe the fire had been burning for some time…The fire caused at least $75,000 in damages to the building and its contents…”

A cigarette is to blame for a fire that damaged the side of the Best Western Hotel in Forest Grove on Sunday afternoon. Firefighters were called to the hotel at 3933 Pacific Ave. at about 2:45 p.m. to reports of a fire burning up the side of the building.

When fire crews arrived, they were able to put the fire out, but not before it had spread up the two-story hotel.

Hotel guests had reported smelling smoke earlier in the day, but nothing was ever found.

A hotel housekeeper first spotted the fire and quickly started to evacuate about a dozen guests at the hotel.

Officials said another housekeeper grabbed a fire extinguisher but the fire was already burning inside the wall space. Staff at the hotel are working to find another hotel in the area for displaced guests.

Fire officials said this is one of several fires in bark dust that has occurred over the last week in Washington County.

“…Sprinklers inside the chute activated to control the fire, but firefighters found smoldering material in or around the trash chutes from the second to the ninth floors…sparks produced by workers grinding metal with an industrial tool around the trash chute caused the fire…”

Clark County Firefighters were called Thursday morning to the Strip to extinguish a fire in a trash chute at the Planet Hollywood, which caused an estimated $100,000 in damage.

Firefighters responded to reports of smoke at 10:12 a.m. and discovered the fire, which was quickly contained, in a fifth-floor chute in the north hotel tower, according to Clark County spokesman Dan Kulin.

Heavy smoke was reported on several floors, and the fifth, sixth and seventh floors were evacuated, Kulin said.

Hospitality Industry Property Risks: West Virginia Hotel Fire Destroys 30 Rooms, Killing One Man

“…Witnesses told authorities the fire appeared to start in the top section of the motel’s west wing, but no cause has been determined… The fire destroyed about 30 rooms…”

The West Virginia Fire Marshal’s Office says a Louisiana man has died of burns he suffered during a weekend hotel fire. Media outlets identified the victim as 21-year-old Dustin McCellen.

The marshal’s office didn’t provide his hometown, and the chief investigator on the Wilsonburg blaze didn’t immediately respond to a message Tuesday.

McCellen was an oil and gas industry worker who was staying at the Towne House West Motor Lodge when it caught fire early Sunday morning.

No one else was injured. Many of the rooms were rented by other gas workers who had gone home for the weekend.
